Are Sunglasses FSA or HSA Eligible? What Counts, What Doesn't, and the December 31 Deadline

Prescription sunglass lenses are FSA/HSA-eligible as a medical expense; non-prescription sunglasses and plain replacement lenses are not. ReFramed cuts prescription lenses for your own Ray-Ban, Oakley or Costa frames in its workshop in Santiago, Chile, with a 1-year warranty and DHL Express delivery to the US in 3–5 business days once shipped. Confirm eligibility with your plan administrator.

Are sunglasses FSA eligible?

Only when they correct your vision. IRS Publication 502 (2025) lists eyeglasses among medical expenses: "You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for eyeglasses and contact lenses needed for medical reasons." The publication does not mention sunglasses at all, which is why plan administrators treat tinted lenses as eligible only when they carry your prescription. A pair bought for style or glare alone is a personal expense.

Can you use HSA for sunglasses?

The same rule applies to a health savings account: the purchase must be for a medical reason, and the prescription is the proof. Prescription sunglass lenses, prescription sunglasses and the lab work to make them qualify; a fashion pair does not. HSA money has no year-end deadline, so if your balance sits in an HSA you can order whenever your prescription is current.

Are prescription sunglasses FSA eligible?

Yes. A complete pair of prescription sunglasses is eligible, and so is the cheaper route: keeping the frame you already own and ordering only the prescription sun lenses. At ReFramed the lenses are cut to the exact shape of your model after we measure the frame, fitted in our workshop and shipped back by DHL Express; see prescription sunglass lenses for your own frames.

Are reading glasses FSA eligible?

Most plans accept over-the-counter readers as vision correction, so they are usually eligible without a prescription; a few administrators ask for one. Our reading glasses ship with CR-39 lenses that have an anti-reflective coating and a blue light filter built in, in strengths from +0.25 to +4.00.

Can I use FSA money for replacement lenses only?

Yes if the lenses carry your prescription, no if they are plain sun lenses. The frame does not need to be new: the IRS looks at the medical purpose of the lenses, not at where the frame came from. That is exactly the case for a Ray-Ban Aviator RB3025 or an Oakley Holbrook OO9102 you already own: order the prescription version of the lenses and keep the frame.

When is the FSA deadline, and what is carryover?

Most health FSAs run on the calendar year: money not spent by December 31 is lost unless your employer offers a grace period or a carryover. For plan years beginning in 2026 the IRS set the health FSA salary-reduction limit at USD 3,400 and the maximum carryover at USD 680 (Rev. Proc. 2025-32, §4.15). Check which option your plan uses before you count on it.

How to pay ReFramed with your FSA or HSA card

Order the prescription lenses online, mail us the frame, and we cut and fit the lenses after measuring it, because frames can vary by up to 1 mm. We ship within 15 days of receiving your frame, by DHL Express (3–5 business days); shipping is free from CLP 150,000. Prices are charged in Chilean pesos, so your card statement will show the converted amount; your receipt itemizes the prescription lenses and the fitting for reimbursement. To receive the lenses in 2026, order by December 5.

FSA, HSA and sunglasses: your questions

Are polarized sunglasses FSA eligible without a prescription?

No. Polarization is a glare feature, not vision correction; a polarized lens becomes eligible only when it also carries your prescription.

Can I buy prescription lenses for my existing Ray-Bans with HSA?

Yes. Send us the frame and your current prescription; we return it with prescription sun lenses within 15 days of receipt, by DHL Express.

Do I need a letter of medical necessity?

For prescription lenses, usually not: the prescription itself is the documentation. Some administrators ask for one on non-standard items, so keep the receipt and the prescription together.

What if my FSA card is declined on an international store?

Pay with another card and submit the itemized receipt for reimbursement. ReFramed charges in Chilean pesos (CLP), so the statement shows your bank's conversion.
