Glasses for a Round Face and an Oval Face: How to Choose the Frame (Eyeglasses and Sunglasses)

For a round face, angular frames work best: square, rectangular and cat eye shapes add length; an oval face takes almost any shape, including aviators and round frames. ReFramed makes bio-acetate eyeglass frames and polarized sunglasses in Chile, with a 1-year warranty and one frame exchange within 60 days if the shape is not for you.

How do I know my face shape? Three measurements

Stand in front of a mirror and compare three lines: the width of your forehead, the width of your cheekbones and the length from hairline to chin. If width and length are close and the jaw is soft, the face is round. If the length is clearly greater than the width and the forehead is slightly wider than the chin, it is oval. A strong, wide jaw points to square; a long, narrow face to oblong.

What glasses suit a round face?

Frames with corners. A square or rectangular front draws straight lines where the face has curves, and a frame slightly wider than the cheekbones makes the face look longer. Thin rims and a high bridge help too. Shapes to use with care: small round frames, which repeat the curve of the cheeks. See square eyeglass frames and rectangular eyeglass frames.

Glasses for a round face: women and men

The rule is the same for everyone; the catalog differs. For women, a cat eye front lifts the outer corners and lengthens the face: the Montgat (145 mm wide) or, for sun, the Audrey Red. For men, a rectangular front such as the Eduardo XL (150 mm) or the square Apolo (140 mm).

Sunglasses for a round face

Choose square or rectangular sun frames with a lens height around 44–50 mm, like the Tokyo or the Alaska, both in bio-acetate with polarized lenses cut in our workshop. Browse polarized sunglasses for women and for men.

What glasses suit an oval face?

Almost all of them, which is why oval is called the balanced shape. Keep the frame width close to the cheekbone width and avoid very oversized fronts that hide the eyebrows. Aviators, round frames and geometric shapes all work: see aviator sunglasses and round eyeglass frames.

Glasses for an oval face: women and men

Women can go from a round frame like the Meli to a cat eye; men from the aviator Orson to a rectangular frame. The deciding factor becomes the measurements below, not the shape.

Square and long faces, briefly

A square face softens with round or oval frames; a long face looks more balanced with frames that have a taller lens (48 mm or more) and a low bridge.

The measurements that matter more than shape

Three numbers decide whether a frame fits: total width (compare it with a pair you already own), bridge (narrower noses need 15–18 mm, wider noses 20–23 mm) and lens height. Every ReFramed frame lists them; here are eight examples.

Frames and face shape: your questions

Do round glasses suit a round face?

Usually they emphasize the roundness; a larger, slightly squared round frame can still work. If in doubt, choose a shape with corners.

Which aviator for an oval face?

Any classic teardrop with the width of your cheekbones; the Orson, at 145 mm, fits most medium faces.

Can I try a frame and exchange it?

Yes: one frame exchange within 60 days of delivery, unused and with its packaging; lenses are custom-made and are not exchanged.

Do the frames come with lenses?

Yes. Eyeglass frames come with prescription or plain lenses; sunglasses come with polarized lenses. Everything is fitted before shipping.
