Mirrored Sunglass Lenses: Colors Explained | ReFramed
A mirror coating is a thin reflective layer on the front of the lens that bounces a share of light away before it reaches your eyes, lowering brightness and glare. The color you see — silver, blue, gold, green, or fire — is mostly cosmetic, but it hints at the light the lens handles best.

That last part is where most buyers get tripped up. The flashy blue on the outside is not the same thing as the tint you look through, and it says surprisingly little about UV or glare on its own. Below, we break down what the mirror actually does, why the color on the outside rarely matches the view on the inside, and which finish earns its keep in which light.
What does a mirror coating actually do?
A mirror coating is a micro-thin metallic or dielectric layer bonded to the front surface of the lens. It reflects a slice of incoming light away — anywhere from roughly 10% to 60% of it — before the tint underneath handles the rest. That is why mirrored lenses look darker and cut glare: less light ever reaches your eyes.
The coating is applied under vacuum, layer by layer, on the outermost face of the lens. Because it removes light on top of the base tint, a mirror pushes most sunglasses into Category 3 on the ISO 12312-1 / EN scale (roughly 8–18% visible light transmission, or VLT), and the heaviest full mirrors into Category 4 (3–8% VLT) — genuinely dark lenses that are not road-legal for driving in most regions.
One thing a mirror does not do is add UV protection. Ultraviolet blocking lives in the lens material, not the shiny top layer. Optical-grade polycarbonate absorbs UV up to about 400 nanometres on its own — full UV400 — with or without a mirror, in any tint. So a bright silver mirror and a plain grey lens made of the same polycarbonate protect your eyes from UV identically; the mirror only changes brightness, glare, and looks (plus a privacy bonus — nobody sees your eyes behind a full mirror).
Mirror color vs base tint: the difference nobody explains
The mirror color is what everyone else sees; the base tint is what you see. They are two separate layers. A lens can wear a bright blue mirror over a neutral grey base — cool on the outside, natural color perception on the inside. As a rule, the base tint drives contrast and color accuracy, while the mirror mostly trims brightness and adds the exterior sheen.
That is why two lenses labeled "blue mirror" can feel completely different to wear: one might sit over grey (neutral), another over a copper base (warmer, higher contrast). The base tints that matter most are grey (true color, max brightness control), brown/amber (warmth and contrast), green (balanced), and rose (soft contrast, good in variable light). Read the mirror color as a shorthand for the light it is built for, not as the color of your view. Silver and blue mirrors reflect the most and suit blinding conditions; gold and fire mirrors ride warm bases that lift contrast in flat or low light. Here is the quick map:

Silver/chrome is the most reflective and the most neutral — the default for genuinely blinding light off snow and water. Blue is the beach and open-water favorite: cool, high-reflectance, great on bright sunny days. Green shifts color the least, which makes it a reliable driving and water-sports pick. Gold and copper warm the scene and lift contrast, handy for golf and fishing flats where you are reading subtle detail. Fire and red ride brown or rose bases and pull contrast up in flat, overcast, or low-contrast conditions — think cycling and sight-fishing. Rose and violet are the easy all-rounders for variable daylight. If you would rather one lens adapt to changing light than commit to a fixed mirror, photochromic lenses are the other route.
Do mirror coatings scratch or wear off?
Yes — more easily than the tint, because the mirror sits on the outermost surface, exactly where sand, shirttails, and keys attack. Modern coatings add a hardcoat that helps a lot, but a mirror will never be as scratch-proof as the polycarbonate underneath it. And once it is scratched or hazed, it cannot be polished back.
Care is simple and it matters more than with a plain lens: rinse with water first to float off grit, then blot with a clean microfiber — never dry-wipe a gritty mirror, and skip paper towels and shirt hems. If the coating does get scratched into your line of sight, the fix is a new lens, not a buffing wheel (polishing strips the coating and warps the optics). Flash mirror vs full mirror vs "Revo"
A flash mirror is a light, partial coating — a subtle sheen that keeps most of the base tint's view. A full mirror is heavier and more reflective: darker, higher-privacy, more of a statement. "Revo" started as a brand famous for satellite-grade mirror coatings; today people use the word loosely for any strong, full-mirror finish, whatever the maker.
In practice: Ray-Ban's flash lenses are the textbook flash example — a hint of mirror over an aviator, style with plenty of light still coming through. Choose flash when you want the look but not a big drop in brightness; choose a full mirror when you want maximum glare rejection and privacy. And note that a mirror is independent of polarization — a mirrored lens can be polarized or not, so don't assume the shine means anything about glare off water.
